Studio Peekaboo

This was going to be last Sunday’s post. Oh well, that’s my near-impossible-to-meet-goal-setting mind for you. Without further ado, here’s a peek at what’s percolating in the studio…

I’m taking some of the characters in the Survival Games series and pushing them off the limits of the page. I want to see them as double-sided (different on each side) and able to have some sort of movement.

I’ve enlarged the figures to be twice their on-paper size and cut them out of 1/4″ birch plywood, gessoed and sanded (and gessoed and sanded, and gessoed and sanded, etc., etc..), and colour-matched paint to the marker shades used in the drawings.

In my mind’s eye I envision many more of these figures, painted to reference the drawings and hung in a grid from the ceiling at eye level with enough space for people to walk among them. Moving in the air currents created by the viewer, the figures will spin and twirl, revealing their duplicitous characters and illustrating the flexible nature of power dynamics in social relationships.
