Wrong.

While I waited for the paint to dry on the canoes, I began work on the figures. Running with the idea of extirpation and extinction I began to research New Brunswick species that fell under either of these two categories.

The Fredericton piece began much the same way as the Wolfville piece did, with a flood of research.

It’s been my practice to make at least one new piece each time the Slim Shady series is mounted to ensure that the exhibiting gallery has some new work to “debut”. In 2010 I upped the ante. I would incorporate the history of the exhibiting gallery and/or the history of the gallery’s location into the new work.

Sunday’s workshop, essentially a Build Your Own Art “Doll” event, was based on the transfer and surface techniques I use in my sculptures. Although slow to fill it ended up with 9 students registered – which is an ideal number of participants in my book. It was great fun to teach something so tied to my practice.

Friday’s talk was attended by ten people, which at this point in my career is standard. An enthusiastic woman named Noreen drove all the way from Halifax to hear me speak 🙂

Wolfville in September was beautiful: sunny, still warm from summer, and about as cute as a town in Nova Scotia can be.

This past year saw many a milestone met in my art career, the most significant being back-to-back solo exhibitions in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.
I can’t stress how rare this is.

Some of you are familiar with Elvis – my dog – and his penchant for Christmas carols (see past posts Dog Days of Christmas, Sirius About Christmas, Elvis’ White Christmas, and Bark Angel).
Here’s one from the unpublished annals just in time for the holidays. Sung to the tune of “Jingle Bells”.
Today I was going to start posting about my recent exhibition history but current high profile news events have left me shaken and troubled.

This was going to be last Sunday’s post. Oh well, that’s my near-impossible-to-meet-goal-setting mind for you. Without further ado, here’s a peek at what’s percolating in the studio…

A pigeon joined us for yoga class today. Apparently this was the second day it has been trapped in the multipurpose room. The double doors leading out to the second-floor patio were left open for the duration of the class with the hopes that the bird would make its way out. No such luck.

On my commute home from a grant writing workshop in Burnaby I found myself to be the sole occupant of a Skytrain car.
I thought to myself, “I could whoop, holler, or send out a primal scream right now.”
Then I thought, “Well, why don’t I?”

Our Danish friend is moving back to Denmark before year’s end and she is being sent off in style with a big, weekend-long viking shindig down in Seattle. Andrew will be representing for both of us, as I am working Friday and attending a grant writing workshop on Saturday. We finished his viking attire tonight and I must say I am duly impressed.

I’ve been using handheld power tools and doing a lot of manual sanding in the studio over the past two weeks. Consequently, that flabby part on the underside of my upper arms hurts like hell. Apparently those flappy bits are muscle. 😉 To anyone out there who doesn’t consider making art to be real work – sometimes it’s all about backbreaking labour.

I am mid-way through reading Malcolm Gladwell’s Outliers. It seems the main factor separating someone who is average and someone who is über-successful is 10,000 hours of practice (plus a bunch of other factors, among them being in the right place and the right time to use your exceptional skills to great advantage).

The equation: band practice on Friday night plus my first public performance as part of the Legion of Flying Monkeys Horn Orchestra on Saturday night plus extreme inertia throughout all of Sunday equals blog neglect. Apologies for the break in posting.
